There has always been something incredibly special about a locket.
Growing up, I was fascinated by my grandmother's locket necklace. Every time she wore it, I couldn't resist opening and closing it, wondering what tiny treasure was inside. It wasn't just a piece of jewelry—it held a story, a memory, someone she loved.
A Brief History of Lockets
Lockets have been cherished for centuries. The earliest lockets appeared as far back as the 16th century, though they became especially popular during the Victorian era (1837–1901). Long before cell phones and digital photographs, a locket was one of the few ways people could carry the image of someone they loved wherever they went.
Many lockets held tiny painted miniature portraits before photography became widely available. As photography advanced in the mid-1800s, families began placing small photographs inside instead. Husbands carried portraits of their wives while traveling for work or serving in the military. Mothers kept photographs of their children close to their hearts. Sweethearts exchanged lockets as symbols of devotion, and many families treasured them as precious heirlooms passed from one generation to the next.
Some lockets also held a lock of hair, a handwritten note, or another tiny keepsake to remember someone who was far away or had passed on. More than jewelry, they became deeply personal reminders of love, family, and the moments people never wanted to forget.
